Melanie Sutherland

Melanie Sutherland is an endorsed Clinical Psychologist who has twenty-eight years of experience, working across the alcohol and other drug (AOD) and public mental health sectors. She spent 17 of these years as a Senior Psychologist. Melanie has been in private practice for the past 13 years based in Northcote, VIC and provides clinical services to people living in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne, including Northcote, Thornbury, North Fitzroy and Preston. Additionally, Melanie has received advanced training and attends ongoing supervision in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy) and is passionate about working with individuals who have experienced trauma and other life defining events. Melanie has a burgeoning interest in Chairwork and Schema Therapy and has attended Level 1 training in the former.

She attends professional development sessions each year to remain abreast of progress in the field and to further her knowledge and experience.

Melanie is skilled at working with individuals experiencing problems with:

  • depression and anxiety (including panic attacks and social anxiety);

  • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD);
  • post-natal depression and anxiety, signs and symptoms;
  • alcohol and other drug use;
  • grief and loss, as well as life transition and adjustment issues;

  • assessment of mental health disorders including identification of causes and symptoms;
  • mental health support.

Melanie can assist individuals to become more skilled in communicating assertively, establishing and maintaining appropriate boundaries, resolving conflict and develop their decision-making and problem-solving skills. She is able to support people to make changes in their lives (e.g. give up smoking, enhance self-care etc.). She has significant experience treating teenagers and adults, both individually and in a variety of group program.

Areas of Special Interest

In addition to working with a range of mental health and personal development issues plus the most common psychological disorders, Melanie is particularly interested in seeing clients, both male and female, who are experiencing antenatal and post natal depression/stress and parenting issues. Melanie has trained and worked in this particular area and she is eligible to provide Pregnancy Support Counselling services under Medicare.

She also has a special interest in working with older adolescents and the psychological factors affecting their mental health. She has had considerable experience across a range of settings, with issues related to development, adjustment, mental health and substance use.
